Chenggong Under the Stars: A Two-Day Coastal Escap

Itinerary

Anchor
Chenggong Township, the largest town on Taiwan’s East Coast between Hualien and Taitung, has a bounty of both mountain and ocean activities. This two-day tour invites visitors to immerse themselves in this harbor town, where they may experience bustling auctions in the fish market, savor fresh seafood, watch the sun rise over the Pacific, learn about the town’s history, and relax with a soothing foot massage.

On summer evenings, we highly recommend the annual “Taitung Under the Most Beautiful Starry Sky” performance series. These are open-air concerts and performances given by musicians from the East Coast and all around Taiwan. Set in open air, the concerts allow you to enjoy enchanting melodies under a canopy of stars and feel the romance unique to Taiwan’s East Coast.

The itinerary for this tour blends culture, cuisine, and nature and will immerse you in the daily rhythms of a fishing village by day and then send you stargazing to the accompaniment of live music by night. It’s an invitation to truly become a “Chenggong person.”

Suggested Itinerary:
Duli Visitor Center → Chenggong Fishing Harbor (Fish Auction) → Sugimiya Katsutarou Residence → Dinner and overnight in Chenggong → Sanxiantai Sunrise → Pisirian Village →Cheng Guang Ao Cultural Landscape (Guang Heng Fa Ruins) → Chengnong Flower Field Restaurant → Marine Environmental Classroom → “Sky Mirror”at Duli Beach

A delightful surprise awaits in the form of a large wall mural by renowned picture-book illustrator Jimmy Liao.

Once the official residence of the government head of the Shinkō subprefecture (as the Japanese then called Chenggong), this residence later served as a doctor’s home and a church meeting hall. Today, exhibits here document the life and works of Sugimiya Katsutarou in the Taitung region, then use these as a lens with which to view the history of the development of Taiwan’s East Coast under Japanese rule.

Near this historic residence, you can also grab a coffee in a vintage café or check out the Chenggong Indigenous Cultural Museum. Both are well worth a visit.
