  • Geographic environment

    Due to its geographic location, the population density in Taitung is low with few factories. This allows Taitung to preserve much of its nature, environment, and clean air. It is a city with very low light pollution, so it is very easy to see stars as compared to the West. You can see the boundless starry sky immediately by looking up once you leave the City. Hence, the “Taitung Starry Night 2018” was held to allow more visitors to experience the bright starry nights in Taitung.

    For star lovers, Taitung is a heaven for stargazing. Through the “Taitung Starry Night” event, astronomers, academics, media and the public voted 14 excellent stargazing spots: Dapo Pond, Guanshan Waterfront Park, Sanxiantai, Jialulan Park, Fanchuanbi Grassland, Dulan Guanhai Park, Luye Gaotai, Jingang Avenue, Taimali Kinchen Mountain Viewing Platform. Visitors can enjoy the fascinating starry nights and Milky Way from the fields, by the mountains or by the sea.

  • Best time for stargazing

    The boundless Milky Way is always fascinating. The period for “Taitung Starry Night” is between April and October and the Milky Way will appear for the longest period between June and August annually. Visitors who wish to have a stargazing trip can check out the “Taitung Starry Night” Facebook page, which has various astronomical information and event details for visitors.

Chihshang Dapo Pond

Dapo Pond is one of the famous attractions in the East Rift Valley. The beautiful yet simple site is the home for many lives, forming a unique ecology. Cycling, lotus viewing and bamboo rafting are the must-try experiences here. However, the night scenery is still the most stunning. Sometimes, one can see the reflection of the sky full of stars in the water. This breathtaking view of the sky dotted by the stars is definitely memorable.

Guanshan Waterfront Park

Located at the tranquil site between the Coastal Range and Central Range, Guanshan Waterfront Park is a good destination for family trips, paddling, and cycling. It is also the place where people on the Guanshan bicycle trail will definitely pass by. At the viewing platform located high above the ground, visitors can oversee the boundless fields in the day and be closer to the starry sky at night.

Receiving the first ray of sun from the Pacific Ocean, Sanxiantai is a popular check-in location on the East Coast. During the dawn, the everchanging cloud color and the golden ocean with slight red tint is a classic view the photographers capture. The night view at Sanxiantai is also breathtaking. Along with the music of nature on the shore, the boundless Milky Way makes an excellent photo. By setting up tripod and using a long exposure setting, one can capture the amazing view of the stars and the sea.

Located where the mountains and the ocean intersect, Jingang Avenue is the coastal version of Mr. Brown Avenue. When the rice is fully ripe, golden waves can be seen at the sides of the avenue, complementing the blue Pacific Ocean. At night, it turns into a starry avenue and visitors can sit at the pavilion, listen to the frogs and insects, and enjoy the relaxing time under the starry sky.

The stars at Lyudao are fascinating. During a clear and cloudless night, one can see weak light from the stars illuminating the sky by lying on the Fanchuanbi Grassland beside Zhaori Hot Spring. The stars are no longer far away; the Milky Way seems to be reachable by stretching out a hand. The magnificent view of the stars and the sensation one feels at the first ray of the sun are truly memorable.

Dulan Guanhai Park

Located beside Provincial Highway 11, Dulan Guanhai Park has a viewing platform, bikeway, walking trail and carpark for the public. It is an excellent exemplar of space utilization. In the Park, there are two roads connected to the outside; they can be used to control the traffic flow. The carpark there is located below the grassland to prevent the car’s headlight from affecting the stargazing experience. It is an excellent choice for stargazing at night.

Luye Gaotai Pavilion

Located at the south section of East Rift Valley, Luye Gaotai is an area at the northwest side where Beinan River and Luye River converge. The surrounding facilities are improving, turning Luye Gaotai into an internationally renowned attraction, which attracts visitors from various countries. It oversees the convergence of the Luye River and the Beinan River. With its wide view and almost absence of light pollution, it is an excellent stargazing spot.

Taimali Kinchen Mountain Viewing Platform

Located in Taimali, Kinchen Mountain is a well know flower-viewing spot with rich natural resources. In addition to the Kinchen flower season (August-October), visitors will be greeted by the valley of various flowers blooming all year round. The platform is on the way to the visitor center hiking trail and is near the Mengzhong Bamboo Forest Trail and Xiaochangcheng Trail. One can see the Kinchen flower area, Hydrangea area and Sakura area during different seasons. Visitors can see the sea and the magnificent sunrise in the day, as well as the starry night and moon at night.

Fuyuan Viewing Platform

The platform provides a 360-degree wide view. It is comprised of a wooden platform and a pavilion. From the Fuyuan Viewing Platform, one can oversee the Dulan Mountain and Lyudao from one side and unique geographical landscape such as Beinan River, Xiaohuangshan and Liji Badlands on the other side. It oversees all the beautiful sceneries of Taitung Plain and East Coast. During the autumn/winter period, one may see eagles such as crested serpent eagle and crested goshawk soaring in the sky. The wide view also makes it an excellent stargazing spot.

Wulu Battery

One can reach Wulu Battery by walking up the stone stairs at the slope behind Wulu Elementary School. The two century-old cannons were the bootie Japan raided from Russia during the Russo-Japanese war in 1903. The cannons were transported to Taiwan and set up at a high point in Wulu tribe. After WWII, Japan surrendered unconditionally, and these century-old cannons were not transported back to Japan. They became witnesses for the courageous act of the Bunun in standing up to the Japanese. Wulu Battery is located in the high area with a wide and beautiful view. It oversees the Wulu Gorge, the entire Wulu tribe and the high mountain vegetable field, giving it a unique view in the day or at night.

Nantian Viewing Platform

Hidden within the forest, the Nantian Viewing Platform has international-grade scenery. One can ride the bike along the bicycle trail of Provincial Highway 26 to enter the green forest from the blue seaside. One can also enter from the Shenyong side, riding through the narrow path and moving along with the ups and downs of the mountain. From the viewing platform, visitors can see the magnificent blue beach when looking north and the legendary Nantian gravel beach when looking south. By staying there, visitors can feel that they are temporarily forgotten by the world, enjoying the freshness of nature through the mountain and sea sceneries. At night, there is little trace of humans with an extremely low level of light pollution, presenting a bright and beautiful starry sky.

Dawu Seaside Park

Dawu Seaside Park has a wide view with the boundless Pacific Ocean at its front and the Central Range at the back. Visitors can have different views by seeing the ocean during the day and stargazing at night while being surrounded by the mountains and the sea. The Park has a comprehensive car park with an outdoor square and stone pillar symbolizing aboriginal culture. There are also a large patch of grass field and benches for visitors to rest. The Dawu Rainbow Village beside the Park is also worth visiting. When you pass by, why not take a short stop to see the scenery and stargaze. You can relax before continuing your journey.

Jialan Hot Springs Park

Located at the 5 km mark of No. 64 Highway, the hot springs in the Jialan Hot Springs Park has a temperature of 43.7 degree Celsius. It is beside the Taimali River and at its east and north sides are the permanent housing community constructed after Typhoon Morakot. The south side faces the mountains and La Lengleng tribe, separated by the Taimali River. The surrounding scenery is tranquil and beautiful. The bicycle trail around the village passes the Jialan Hot Springs Park and goes to Lawan Bridge and the permanent housing through the Sky Trail, forming a circular path. This has the function of both touring and relaxing and is an excellent spot for stargazing.
