Water Flowing Upwards
Tuesday: Open 24 hours a day
Around Dulan Fishing Bridge and halfway up the hill, visitors could see a stone with inscriptions of "Qiguan" (A Spectacular View) in red, standing alongside the road. A narrow ditch lies next to the stone and water in the ditch runs upwards against gravity. The site is a famous amazement that always attracts the passersby. In fact, the tilting angle of roadside landscape larger than that of the road surface is the secret behind the illusion.

The longer I thought about it, the more stunning it gotA ditchlet with the opportunity to make a small hike, may not seem amazing at first sight and if it wouldn't have been on my way, bicycling from Dulan to Taitung, I would have never went there. But at one part the water actually seems to be running upwards. At first sight it doesn't seem exciting, but the longer I stood there, looking at the stream going slowly upwards and than quickly down again, the more amazed I got. Apparently it is some kind of optical illusion, but although changing my perspective and looking at it from different angles, to me it looked to me as if the water is running upwards and the laws of physics stopped working for a few meters in southern Taiwan.
Wow! If I did Not k ow better it would be black magic!Approaching the site we asked some passers by as to the location of the magical water, the pointed to a small ditch running beside the footpath. Amen! A miracle! The water did indeed run upwards. Possibly the best attraction in taitung, eventually we had to leave as we could not hog this wonder all to ourselves. Also we got bananas from one of the vendors. Toilets make this a good rest stop as well as a destination in itself.
A Stopover for Visual IllusionThis place is a good stopover. It provides a visual illusion of water actually flow upstream due to the surrounding landscape. The water in the drain seems to flow upwards instead of down.
A Short StopoverThis place was not one of our intended sightseeing stops, but our host drove us to this place as a quick stopover. We spent about 20 minutes at this point walking a short distance along the drain and then taking a rest break and buying some local fruits and produce at the nearby stalls.
Visual illusionJust a visual illusion. Water is actually running down but due to surrounding landscaping, the water in the drain seems to be running up. Many people still don't get it after explaining......
