Located at about 7km straight distance north of Siangyang on Southern Cross-Island Highway,Chiaming Lake is an oval-shape lake at high altitude with praised names such as “the sapphire of high mountains” and “angel’s teardrop.”The surface of Chiaming Lake is 120m long and 80m wide,at elevation of 3,310m. Chiaming Lake is surrounded by emerald green forest plantation. Reflecting azure blue sky to its clear surface, the lake looks as if it is so deep that you can never reach its lake bed and emits a sense of tranquility of a fairyland.Legend has it that Chiaming Lake was formed by meteor impact, which makes it even more exceptional.
classic trail to a beautiful lake3 days 2 nights for this trail is more comfortable, especially stay 1st night in Xiangyang cabin for adjusting height is better. Like most of campsites and huts in mountains in Taiwan, we need to apply ahead and depends on luck to get space. However, it's a classic trail with stunning view. The view from standing on top to see Jiaming Lake is incredible, reflection of the clouds and blue sky with the winds make the surface of the lake change color is just simply "WOW"!
3D2N Adventure Hiking to Angel Tear (Jiaming Lake)Hiking at Taiwan's mountain must apply for Permit. Normally permit application only approves 1 month to climbing date. But some Adventure Companies able to secure it easier. Must get a reliable company. A long waited trip to Taiwan to see the 'Angel Teardrop' Lake. 4 of us started the hike with 2 local guides. The main guide was the one who appeared on TV to bring some celebrities to the lake. Green horns like us were so daring & want to conquer these few mountains rangeing from 2800m to 3300m. We stayed 2 nights at 2 different rest houses. Well, view can be very beautiful & brethtaking, but it took hardwork for us to reach these places. The achievement was getting there to see & touch the water of the lake. Weather was very good to us. No rain, no mist & no strong wind. My guide - Pirate was really fit & good. He carried with him fruits for us & also extra food to cook for us at the 2nd rest house. The local told us that hiking to Jiaming Lake is the toughest even though this is not the highest mountain in Taiwan. The toughness comes from the hiking of mountains up & down ranging from 2800m to 3300m. Therefore, going downhill doesn't euqal to easy climbing as you have to climb up again later.Overall, we accomplished & we saw the Lake. Only 4 of us were at the lake. Having the whole lake for ourselves taking photos from all different angels & admire the beauty of the lake & its surrounding. 2nd night at the rest house, we enjoyed the thousands of stars over our head. We set off the 3rd day at 4am & we witnessed the sun rise at the high mountain. By 9am, we reached the base camp.
A great hike to one of Taiwan's most beautiful Alpine LakesJiaming lake is a great 2-3 day hike in the south of Taiwan. Permits need to be applied for now. The old system where you could camp anywhere is gone making it more trouble to do, but it's very much worth the effort. I've hiked it twice now once in winter and once in summer. It was freezing cold on both occasions. Be prepared!

Torturing yet amazing experienceWe spent 4 days hiking to the Jiaming Lake with the help of a local tour company. The guide brought us up and arranged accommodation for us at the lodges for three nights. The trail was not that easy and some paths were a bit rough. We finally overcame it and enjoyed the sights and experience. It was like hiking in the sky with clouds underneath you. The lake was not as much as we expected but still worth the experience.
Teardrop from an angelThis was a 3-day hike and it was worth everything to accomplish it. The beauty of trails and mother nature....all were beyond words. We took bus to get down to Taitung and back to Taipei by train. My advise? Train was definitely better....We hiked to the cabin on the first day. On the second dya, we woke up at 2 am and started our hike from the cabin to the top, the Jiaming Lake and got back to the cabin within the same day. For the second day, it was a trip of total 18 km ups and downs, including multiple crazy uphills. However, the sense of accomplishing this challenge and witness the beauty worth every bit of the sweating!!
