Lisong Hot Spring

Saturday: Open 24 hours a day

Lisong Hot Spring is located near Motian,at the 169.5 km of Southern Cross-Island Highway. The hot spring can only be reached by going down to the valley and crossing the creeks. A tour guide is highly recommended. Lisong Canyon Hot Spring is one of the famous river-based hot springs. Its water gushes out of the holes on stone slopes and even forms a waterfall of hot spring. The stone slope behind the waterfall is washed over time by hot spring water and now possesses a crystal-like texture. With the surroundings of stalactite steles comprised of calcium carbonate and natural landscapes,Lisong Hot Spring is best compared with a fairyland.

Even after reading reviews I don't think you can fully appreciate Li Song Hot Spring until you experience it yourself. The reviews were extremely helpful and I feel each of us have a story of our own. The weather is always unpredictable, road conditions could be unknown and there is always the chance you may not be able to cross the river at the end of the trail and see the spring (happened to friends of ours in November) We almost turned around 3 times - the first when there was mud covered road under construction, the second when we watched workers rappelling on the mountain side spraying cement to prevent mudslides ( at least that's what I thought they were doing) and the third when we could not read the open/closure sign in Mandarin!! Fortunate for our group we made the decision to forge on and had a breath taking experience of a truly natural hot spring! That being said if you are willing to take a few risks don't hesitate - I am not sure there are many opportunities like this. Definitely a challenging hike (so be in decent shape). It takes about 1 hour to get down. I was fortunate to find a pair of decent gloves (plenty are there but none I would choose) to use at the top of the trail, though others in my group chose not to use any. Either bring your own or be willing to wear someone else's. My suggestion if you do plan on going is to read as many reviews as possible, go early so you can enjoy as much time as you would like, and make sure you leave adequate time to get out (the day we went was overcast, clouds were low and it was recommended my others who had just finished at the spring to be out by 3:00pm so we didn't get caught in the pitch black). If you take a car, which we did from Guanshan I would park at the top prior to the access road and not drive down the single lane. there is room for only 2-3 cars to park making it difficult to turn around, which you would then rely on someone being at their car to get you out. The driving adventure, hike, hot water coming off the rock, color of mineral deposits in the spring made this an unforgettable adventure.

    Amazing creation from nature

    Traveler rating:5 2018-04

Naturally formed hot spring, hidden in the mountains. Make sure you have full energy cuz before you reach there, first need to overcome 40mins of downslope, then cross the river, climb over rocks... very exciting journey and totally worth it. It's amazing to see the elegant green formed naturally on the rocks by seeweeds and chill in the hot spring. If you plan to go there and return in one day, better start your hike before noon to have plenty of time enjoy and return before it gets foggy and dark.

    Amazingly Fantastic Trip

I came here all by myself, engaging a local tour bed and breakfast the Siama @bunonsiama, the folks brought me here. I came from Chi Shang Train Station and it takes about 45 min- 1 hour if you come form Chi Shang to the entrance to Lisong hot spring. The entrance is in a cabbage patch, from there you will need to climb down a good 1 - 1 and half hour to reach the stream that leads to the Hot Spring. The climb is not easy if you have not been exercising. Overall the weather is rather cold but it is during Oct to Late Mar that it is advisable to come here as during the hotter times, the water level goes up and it will be a challenge to make it cross river to reach the springs. The spring is wild and it is free , you can even opt to camp in the valley itself which I think will be quite an experience. You will need to do some rappelling and a little bit of river crossing before you reach the hot sprint. The cold river water is really a killer and the hot spring is really really hot. Lying in the shallow springs and enjoying it while in the open is really amazing. The scenery is also breath taking too. Definitely a must come if you can!

A tough hike to a wonderful place

    Traveler rating:5 2018-01

This place is amazing. The hike down is worth the trip alone, as it's very steep, and if you aren't used to using ropes to descend (like me), it's a good introduction. We did this as part of a 5 day tour of the east coast with a car. I can't imagine how'd you'd get here without a car! The time to get down and up depends on your fitness. We met people on the way saying it took an hour to get down, and 2 hours back, but we did it in 30min and 45min respectively. This said, it is tough. When you get down, you have unspoilt views of the valley, and beautiful hot springs. Not at all touristy, but worth the drive.
