    Great Experience

The owner of the B&B loves surfing and won many surfing competition. Becuase of this, the owner moved to Taitung and run the B&B years ago. The Tunghe B&B also offers surfing class for visitors. The room is very clean. 1f floor is a public area where you can watch TV, use Kitchen and laundry room. The owner is kind and respect each visitors privacy. It is very close to beach where people can surf and just relaxing. However, it is a little far from Taitung downtown. It is better to drive and rent a car. I strongly recommend people who love surfing to stay.

Don't expect them to help you catch any waves in March

This was my second time surfing in Taidong. The first time I stayed at Low Pressure and regret not booking there or somewhere else this time. As a hostel this place is perfectly adequate. It's inexpensive, with free laundry and a common room, and we were able to get clean towels and soap. The problem is that it's not billed as just a hostel, at least as it's sold on booking.com, where we made our reservations under the name "Donghe Taitung Surf Shop and Hostel." The Chinese name is Donghe minsu 東河民俗. Here it's called "Dong He House." Same place, assuming the picture is accurate. It's worth adding here that I cane here specifically to surf. There's not a ton else to do in town, although it's pretty if you can get some transportation to drive around the area. First of all, after we arrived and paid for our stay, we realized that the room did not have a private bathroom as described online. We had been very certain to get a room with a private bath, but the staff attendant asked for us to show her the confirmation email to prove that it said what it said. I felt like we were being accused of lying when we first got there. In any case, she eventually realized that the English room description online was wrong, so she moved us to another empty room. Fine. Thank you. The biggest disappointment was that this "Surf Shop and Hostel" refused to rent us surfboards or offer any transportation to the breaks. This was especially inconvenient as most of the other places in town only rent to their own guests or preferentially to their own guests. I only discovered this after paying for both of our nights. I am an advanced surfer with ten years of experience on several continents, but the staff/policy at this supposed "surf" hostel assumes that anyone who is there in the winter, when the waves are most consistent, is going to wreck their boards/drown/whatever. So, anyway, no rentals. As to transit to the breaks, first I was told that their scooters are all broken. Then when I got on the phone with the owner, who is apparently rarely there, I was told the problem was that I do not have a Taiwanese driver's license. An international driver's license is sufficient to drive/rent in Taiwan; they are just unwilling to rent. We were also told that there were no lessons available for my girlfriend because the waves were way too big (they were not--they just require a ten minute drive to a sheltered, sandy bay). In the end, we were able to get all the things we need from other places, but it was a hassle because most places reserve these services for their own overnight guests. Taidong Surf Shop and Hostel down the street rented me a board and a scooter. Low Pressure Surf around the corner provided board rental for me and a beginner lesson for my girlfriend (in perfectly safe, waist-high water, in a sandy bay 10 minutes away by car). If you come in March and want to surf (and by all means do come in March--the waves can get good), I recommend one of these other places. Do not expect a "surf shop" at Donghe Taitung Surf Shop and Hostel (here called "Donghe house"); it's just a hostel.

    Hotel with a view

We spent the night here on a bike trip down the east coast. It was a little bit pricier than I would normally go for, but not too expensive. We stayed in a double room and it was very comfortable with a great view of the coast and mountains from both the bedroom and bathroom! The staff was nice and let us cook dinner in their kitchen. They also gave us free coupons for breakfast at the Donghe Baozi restaurant which was cool. It seemed like they catered primarily to surfers.
