    Nice hosts but overpriced

    Traveler rating:3 2017-07

We stayed for 4 nights and in general we had a good time in Green Island. The hosts were very nice and accommodating. However, basic is the best word to describe this hotel/B&B. Room is basic, simple breakfast. There was no housekeeping during our stay. Wi-fi only works in the lobby. Green Island is still relatively primitive and under-developed, which may accounts for the high costs and basic facility/service.

    Average hostel/B&B

    Traveler rating:3 2016-04

Average B&B. Unfortunately I went during one of the busiest holiday seasons so the prices were quite expensive for the stay. ~100 CDN per night. The room was simple and clean, 2 beds and a bathroom. They must have upgraded a bit since there were some basic amenities such as towels, but no toiletries. Room had AC, TV, and slippers. Staff was very friendly including the guy who picked us up at the ferry terminal, as well as the receptionist. She was very patient with us and called around and booked us our scuba diving trip, all-you-can-eat BBQ dinner tickets (which were cheaper through her apparently), and the Zhaori hot springs tickets. She also asked the guy who picked us up from the ferry terminal to get us scooters to rent. WIFI was hit and miss, as the routers were near the staircase. Ask for a room closer to the staircase as our room was the furthest away and therefore, did not receive any WIFI signal at all. Breakfast was simple, it was a piece of ham, 2 fried eggs, and white toast with cold red tea.

    Average hostel, not a B&B

    Traveler rating:2 2015-10

Great to be picked up from the ferry. Accommodation - Very high cost. Not overly cleen. This is not a b&b, it feels like a hostel that doesn't have cooking facilities. I had to ask for towels, the "bedspread" barely covered my body, on a giant bed and didn't feel clean. The rooms are super basic, which is fine, but definitely not a clean feeling in the room. I moved the bed and the power plugs were all coming out of a socket. Cigarette butts were in the ashtray on the table for the 3 days I was there. Accommodation on Green Island is limited, so they can set the prices high and standards as average. Breakfast was white bread, with fried egg and ketchup. We took lots of our own fruit and so didn't eat there, but still obviously had to pay for the "breakfast". Location seems to be the best for all accommodations on the island -- close to restaurant, can rent bikes etc. Was left feeling frustrated and ripped off but we think this would have been the same anywhere. They rented us a car, which was great. NTD1800/24hrs....

    Disappointing

    Traveler rating:2 2015-07

Unfortunately, our trip to Green Island started off rocky. The train we needed to get from Taipei to Taidong to catch the last Ferry to Green Island was full, and thus, we missed it. As such, we were forced to forgo our first night at Star-Moon and stay in a hotel near the ferry dock. We contacted the hotel first thing in the morning before our expected arrival, and requested a refund for the night. It was denied. Fair enough... policy is policy and we accepted that. As much as we weren't happy to lose the money, as seasoned travelers, we're aware that traveling doesn't always go as planned, and you might lose out. That said, I think it is wise for the business owner to consider that the patron might feel like they aren't getting their dollar's worth when this happens, and perhaps consider making some concessions to soften the blow. This previous notion came to the forefront when we arrived and requested an electric scooter. We only wanted it for a total of 18 hours, but were asked to pay for 24 hours instead (and they IMMEDIATELY rented it out when we returned it, so there was certainly no potential financial loss). I was hoping that, since we paid (a lot) for an unused night, they might meet us halfway on this (a few hundred NT). Nope. Then we got to the room. I am a reasonable person, but when we're paying nearly $200 USD/night (14,000NT for 3 nights), I expect some hotel basics. Namely, towels and cleanliness. Our bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a very long time. Hairs from previous people were stuck to the walls, and the mirror was so grimy we could barely see into it. The floor was disgusting (I wouldn't walk barefoot in there), and there were NO TOWELS!! They provided tiny hand towels, and that was it. I ended up requesting 8 of these towels so that my husband and I could each have 4 to try our best to dry off. Also, the beds are like wooden boards - not at all comfortable. Upon this discovery, I was getting to be really agitated with the overall situation. We paid quite a bit of money, and we were getting absolutely no value. I personally felt the unspoken contract between hotel and patron was violated at this point. But it got worse. First, I would like to give the gentleman who helped us (in English) a lot of credit, because he was incredibly friendly and was largely helpful (and a full point of my rating is pretty much attributed to him). But... he also gave us a lot of misinformation (that ended up costing us). Specifically, he had advised us that the breakfast ran until 10. Nope. We missed breakfast and had to take a trip into town to get it. He also told us that the hot springs were open 24 hours. Nope. They are open until 2am. Missing breakfast was particularly upsetting because we ended up having to spend more money out of pocket, and we had already spent way more than planned. This was made even more frustrating when we actually did get breakfast the next day, and it was a made-at-order egg, piece of heated processed ham, and plain bread (i.e. something whipped up in mere minutes). Not only was the breakfast cheap and disappointing, they were unwilling to make us one when we had been misinformed by their staff! The nail in the coffin was the rejection of a later checkout. Our Ferry wasn't leaving until 2:30, and we really wanted to go snorkeling (we couldn't go previously due to a severe tropical storm). We were hoping we could go out in the morning and return to clean off before checking out. Despite the cleaning people not even being near our floor when we were told to check-out (10am), we were denied!! They charged us for a whole night that we weren't even there, and they couldn't give us a couple of extra hours!! It's not like the room was going to be cleaned anyway. It is quite clear that they are able to get away with shoddy service because there are so few alternatives, but just because you *can* do it, doesn't mean you should. I cannot attest to whether the service was on par with competitors, but if there had been a different option, and knowing what I know now, I most certainly would have taken it. Thankfully, the Island itself is incredible and overshadows the terrible accommodations. If you were asking me to rate the Island, I would give it a 5. It's magnificently beautiful, interesting and wonderful. There is so much to see and do! It's definitely a place to visit.

Friendly B&B, but need to bring your own towels!

    Traveler rating:3 2015-04

The best thing about this B&B was the friendly staff. A few days before our arrival we were contacted by their manager (in English) giving information about ferry timings and offering assistance in making bookings. I think this is especially helpful during summer-weekends when the island can become crowded like a night-market! They usually send a van to the pier to pick up new guests (and drop guests leaving), but give them your arrival time to be on the safe side. Rooms were OK for one night or two, no closet and they do NOT provide towels except a small, handkerchief-sized one, so bring your own if you need one! Breakfast is not really worth mentioning (some cold tea, two slices of toast with one fried egg and a slice of fried bacon to make into a sandwich). Scooters (petrol or e-powered) are available for rental, but better book ahead if you plan coming here during summer-weekends! All over, we enjoyed our stay, although the island does not offer much really worth visiting.
