Chengguangao Matsu Temple is located at the Siaogang District of Chenggong Township. It is the oldest Matsu Templein Taitung. Chengguangao is the largest natural harbor on Taiwan’s east coast and is the port where Han people first landed on the east coast. Matsu is the main religious goddess whom fishermen worship. This temple was built in 1871. In 1949,a fire burnt down the temple and the restoration was challenged by the shortage of artisans for renovation. The local residents thus invited indigenous people to help paint the patterns on the wood brackets on the top of a column supporting the crossbeam. That was the first time that indigenous people participated in construction of Han’s temple.
