Leisurely hot springs bath :

Long-established hot spring areas known throughout Taiwan and overseas are Jhihben Hot Spring, Wuku Hot Spring surrounded by forest covered green mountains on the Southern Cross Island Highway and one of the world’s top 3 seabed hot springs, Green Island(Lyudao) Jhaorih Hot Spring on Green Island.

Wild hot spring :

Hot springs can be found on Taitung’s mountains, its coast, in its river valleys and in virgin forest and it can be described as a paradise for hot springs lovers. The more famous wild hot springs, are Hongye, Wulu, Bilu, Jinlun and Dufeilu hot springs. April-October the river levels are high and can be dangerous so visitors are advised to stay away from wild hot springs at this time.

Hot springs can be found on Taitung’s mountains, its coast, in its river valleys and in virgin forest, hot springs water flows out accompanied y beautiful natural scenery. Visiting "Taiwan’s back garden" Taitung, let the natural scenery and the hot springs relax you and the fresh air invigorate you.

Things to note about hot spring bathing

  • Don’t get in a hot spring pool on an empty stomach as this can easily result in dizziness and nausea.
  • Don’t get in a hot spring pool immediately after eating to prevent a large amount of blood flowing to the surface of the body and causing disruption to the digestive function.
  • If you have had insufficient sleep or are mentally tired, suddenly immersing yourself in a hot spring bath can cause cerebral anemia or cause fainting.
  • While drinking or after drinking alcohol don’t get in a hot spring pool immediately as the hot water will accelerate blood circulation and can cause a cerebral hemorrhage.
  • When you have had a long journey or feel tired don’t get in a hot spring pool to prevent you feeling even more tired
  • Don’t get in a hot spring pool immediately after vigorous exercise to avoid suffering hot spring shock.
  • Women should not go in a hot spring pool during and just before and after their menstrual cycle
  • Pregnant women should not take a hot spring bath in the early and late stages of pregnancy
  • Don’t get in a hot spring pool when you are really excited or angry and your heart rate is above 100 beats per minute
  • People with a fever over 37.5℃, or sufferers of chronic disease and infectious diseases such as acute pneumonia, acute tracheobronchitis, tonsillitis, acute otitis media and acute cold with fever should not take hot spring baths.
  • Suffers of cancer and leukemia should avoid hot spring baths because the hot water will speed up the metabolism and make them weaker.
  • People who are weak form malnutrition or illness should avoid hot spring baths,

Jhihben Hot Spring

This was the earliest of Taitung’s hot spring to be developed; in the Japanese Colonial Period the Japanese established a public bathhouse at Zhiben;after Retrocession in 1945 a number of hot spring hotels were opened in the area and the beneficial effects of hot spring baths promoted, making Zhiben very well-known and one of the most popular hot spring areas in Taiwan.

Jinlun Hot Spring

The Taitung area is one of frequent tectonic plate movement so there is a lot of geothermal activity. Most of the springs are carbonate springs. Jinlun Hot Spring is one the lower reaches of the Jinlun River and is a well-known local hot spring;the water is weak alkaline carbonate, colorless with a slight sulfur smell; the abundant spring water made it a popular outdoor bathing spot for the Paiwan tribe in days gone by.

Jinlun Hot Spring Jinlun Hot Spring

Jhaorih Hot Spring

This is one of the world’s three best known sea bed hot springs. It is situated on in the tidal zone in the southeast of Green Island(Lyudao) . When the tide goes out, hot spring water can be seen gushing through cracks in the coral rock. Take a nighttime hot spring bath at Green Island(Lyudao) Jhaorih Hot Spring and you can look up and view the stars overhead and look out to sea and see sky and sea merge in the far distance.

Wulu Hot Spring

This hot spring is situated below Tianlong Bridge in Wulu Gorge, the spring water gushing from cracks in the cliff face; the clear sodium bicarbonate water can be drunk or used for bathing. Regular bathing can ease arthritis, nerve pain and stomach ailments. Accompanied by beautiful gorge, huge rock and giant tree scenery enjoy a natural forest sauna here.

Wulu Hot Spring Wulu Hot Spring

Hongye Hot Spring

Hongye Valley, mountain embraced and forest-surrounded and with a river winding through it, is a popular wild hot spring. The spring is a metamorphic rock spring of the Central Mountain Range’s Dananao formation, is clear and odorless and can be used for bathing and drinking. It is said that regular bathing can help burns heal, and cure stomach and skin ailments;it is a precious natural asset.

Temperature:Average temperature of 60℃, 42℃ in the hot spring area.

Lisong Hot Spring

To reach the spot the river has to be traced and it takes around one hour to reach. The walls of the gorge are covered in natural brown, green and dark gray colors caused by moss and iron oxidization and other reasons, the colors complementing the milk white spring water and the green forest. This hot spring is known as the most beautiful wild hot spring in Taiwan.
