Daren Township used to be where Paiwan Ajogetsu Tribe gathered. In Paiwanese, ajogetsu means aggregation. In early days, the locals lived in separate area but eventually came together as a tribe to protect themselves from enemies’ invasions and attacks. Today Daren Township is resided by the following villages:Senyong, located at the south end of Taitung County,Anshuo, the most populated village here,Nantan, the only village along the Pacific,Tuban, the only village that still holds maljeveq (Five-Year Ceremony),Sinhua, located at the highest altitude, and Taiban,a village consisted of two tribes. Daren Township used to be governed by Dawu Township and was zoned as Shandi Township (Mountain Township) in 1946. Since over 90% of its lands are hills and mountains, and residents gather only at very few river terraces and valleys, eventually it was renamed after Daren Village, which is located at the estuary plain of Anshuo Creek. The border location of Daren Township much preserves the unchanged natural environment. Nantian Rock,Taiwan Keteleeria and riverbased hot springs are among the precious natural resources. Every winter, over a million amethyst butterflies gather at the valley beneath Dawu Mountain, giving the area the name "the valley of purple butterflies." This is one of the only two butterfly eco wonders in the world, next to Mexico’s Monarch Butterfly Valley.
